“Still, I won't give up.” To the creators of the future | Nagoya ULTLA talk

Nagoya City Board of Education / SPACE Inc.2024.02 | Talk / Education

At Impact Day of the Nagoya ULTLA Program, run jointly by the Nagoya City Board of Education and SPACE Inc., I gave a talk and screened my work. For elementary and junior high school students, it was a time to share the possibilities of creativity through film and talk.

Background

  • The Nagoya ULTLA Program supports inquiry-based learning for elementary and junior high school students living or studying in Nagoya.
  • Under four themes, “self,” “nature,” “business” and “living,” it supports learning suited to each child's individuality and traits.
  • Working with local companies and experts, it aims to help children discover their own way of learning.

Theme of the talk

“Still, I won't give up. Three keys that open up creativity”

  • Relationships with others who don't give up on small hopes: Connections with others who believe in faint hope together broaden creative thinking.
  • A community that accepts who you are: People and places that accept you as you are encourage your own expression.
  • A place to believe in your gifts and let them bloom: An environment where you can believe in and use the potential sleeping inside you sharpens creativity.

A comment from Narita

As a child, I could not express myself well in words, and film was the first tool that taught me the joy of communicating. I was truly happy to share with the children the joy of noticing what sleeps inside you and expressing it freely. This is an age of expanding possibilities. That is exactly why I hope they let their creativity fly freely.

Results and response

  • The whole venue was wrapped in a warm atmosphere, and the children's faces lit up.
  • The talk, about carrying through film and music what words cannot, was highly praised.
  • The organizers thanked me, saying it was “a truly irreplaceable time.”

Client's voice

John spoke at Impact Day of the Nagoya ULTLA Program, and I feel he had a striking impact that changed the atmosphere of the venue in an instant, not only for the children but for the adults too. Thank you for a wonderful opportunity of film and talk.
What stayed with me most is how sincerely he creates through film, facing the question of what we can do so that diverse people can each live shining lives.
I think it is truly wonderful work, using the power of film and music to reach into realms words cannot, and to move people's empathy even at a subconscious level.
We too are taking on the challenge of how to pass on to children things that cannot be put into words but capture the essence. Grateful for this connection, we look forward to continuing to work together. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for a truly irreplaceable time.

On the Nagoya ULTLA official website, I am also introduced as one of the “ULTLA Navigators.” My message to the children is the same as my talk: “Still, I won't give up.”
