Night de Light “Sakura” music video

2021.03 | Music video

Night de Light / Sakura [MV]

I directed the music video “Sakura” for Night de Light, a band based in Hokkaido. A film that answers, in images, the songs of a band that has kept singing about hope and prayer.

Making the wordless power visible

How do you make the wordless power of music visible on film? Cherry blossoms, a motif everyone knows. Blooming, falling, and coming round again. Layering onto them life's partings and reunions and the turning seasons, I aimed for a film that touches the heart beyond words.

A collaboration between people with the same wish

With Night de Light, I also worked on the film for their suicide-prevention song,“Thank You for Being Alive” (Hokkaido Inochi no Denwa).Music that brings hope, and film that wants to bring hope. A precious collaboration between people with the same wish. I hope we can keep gently supporting someone with sound and light.

Timeline

How it came together

  1. 2020.09 — 2021.02

    Making the storyboards

    Director

Before the shoot, I built each scene one by one with the storyboard team. Blooming, falling, coming round again. In what order, and in what light, to show the life of a cherry blossom and people's partings and reunions. It took nearly half a year to take shape.

  2. 2021.02.17

    Single “Sakura” released

Their 18th single, with “Sakura,” “Checkered Flag,” “MAZE,” and “Thank You for Being Alive,” made with Hokkaido Inochi no Denwa.

  3. 2021.03.06

    “Sakura” music video released

Direction / online editing and VFX

About three weeks after the single came out, it was released on the band's official channel. Besides directing, I also handled the final online editing and VFX.

  4. 2021.03.10

“Thank You for Being Alive” music video released

    Director

Released four days after “Sakura,” a music video made together with Hokkaido Inochi no Denwa. I made films for two songs from the same single, one after the other.
