Hidetoshi Nakata, NIHONMONO opening film

I made the opening film for NIHONMONO. NIHONMONO is a project led by former Japan national soccer player Hidetoshi Nakata, exploring what is genuine in Japanese culture. On foot across all 47 prefectures, he has kept visiting the genuine things not found in guidebooks — sake, crafts, farming, traditional skills — and the people who make them.

What an opening film needs to do

The role of an opening film is to create an entrance to the story about to begin. In just a few seconds, it conveys the warmth and dignity of that world and gently settles the viewer's breathing. With images and sound that leave room to breathe, I expressed respect for the sense of beauty quietly alive across Japan and the people who carry it on.

What I valued

Not speaking loudly, but standing quietly. The stillness and depth of genuine Japanese things, in pared-back images. I aimed for an entrance where, in the first breath, you want to see what comes next.

This film is also shown at the “J-WAVE NIHONMONO LOUNGE” at Takanawa Gateway Station in Tokyo.
