Saiku Heian no Mori, Saiku historic site | Heian picture-scroll projection mapping
2021.02 — 2021.11 | Projection mapping
I made projection mapping at Saiku Heian no Mori in Saiku, Mie. The Saiku national historic site is where the Saio, the imperial princesses who served Ise Grand Shrine on the emperor's behalf, once lived. On restored Heian-period buildings, I painted a picture scroll in light.
Delivering a core message with light and shadow
Projection mapping is painting with light in the dark. White and black, light and shadow. It is said that in black and white, the human eye can focus on the most important features and grasp the core message. That is why, by sending a continuous flow of light into the eye, you can gently deliver a message from beyond conscious awareness.
Something you can only experience there
Layering film onto the historic space of Saiku. The presence of the Heian era a thousand years ago, and yourself, here and now. I created a story where time and light intersect, one you can only experience there.

Saiku Heian Emaki Projection Mapping (first edition)
Motion graphics
Onto the restored main hall, we projected the story of a Heian-period Saio and images evoking Japan's original landscape. Saiku stands at the entrance to the lands of Ise Grand Shrine and is said to be the only place in Japan where the Saiku existed.

Heian Emaki Projection Mapping 2021 (second edition)
The second edition expanded the scale, projecting onto the west and east side halls as well as the main hall. Its motifs include works held by the Saiku Historical Museum, such as the “Saio Procession Scroll,” the “Tales of Ise Screen” and the “Genji shell-matching game.” The main program, about eight minutes long, was projected repeatedly with intermissions.
